When to retire a mooring line: reading MEG4 without the guesswork
Mooring lines used to be retired when they looked bad enough. OCIMF's MEG4 replaced that with a system: every line's strength is referenced to the ship's design, and retirement is a residual-strength decision, not a gut call. It reads like a lot of acronyms, but the logic underneath is simple - and it changes what you order and when.

Everything references the Ship Design MBL
MEG4 anchors the whole mooring arrangement to one number: the Ship Design Minimum Breaking Load, the strength the mooring system as a whole was designed around. Every other figure is a percentage of it, which is why asking what MBL rope you need is premature until you know the ship's design MBL. Lines are then specified at 100 to 105 percent of that number, so the line matches the design rather than out-muscling it.
The working limits you operate to
- Working load limit: 55 percent of the Ship Design MBL for wire rope, 50 percent for synthetic cordage. That is the ceiling for normal operations, not the breaking point.
- Tails are deliberately stronger than the line - a tail design break force of 125 to 130 percent of the Ship Design MBL - so the tail is never the weak link and the line fails first, away from the ship.
- Mixing lines of different strength or material on the same arrangement undoes the logic: load sharing goes uneven and one line takes the snatch.
Retirement is about residual strength, not a date
This is where owners most often want a single number and MEG4 declines to give a simple one. Lines are not retired on a fixed cycle count or a calendar. They are retired on residual strength - the aim is to replace a line or tail before its average residual strength falls to about 75 percent of the Ship Design MBL. You judge residual strength from a combination of things: destructive testing of cut samples, the load history the line has actually seen, and inspection of the wear zones. A synthetic line can lose strength internally with almost no surface sign, which is exactly why it still looks fine stopped being acceptable.
What actually drives a line to the bin
- Cyclic loading and age - strength drops with use even when there is no obvious damage.
- Localised damage - chafe at the fairlead, a heat-glazed patch, cut or pulled strands - can retire a line on its own regardless of the rest.
- Tails wear faster than the lines they connect to and are usually the first thing on the reorder list.
The Line Management Plan ties it together
MEG4 expects a Line Management Plan - a living record, on paper or in software, of what each line is, when it went into service, the loads it has seen and when it is due for assessment or retirement. It is what turns retirement from a judgement call on the day into a decision you can defend, and it is what tells you what to reorder before a line fails rather than after. Vetting increasingly asks to see it.
