How to spot a counterfeit marine spare part before it reaches the engine

A counterfeit part does not look counterfeit - that is the whole problem. It looks like the original, costs less and arrives sooner, and the difference only shows when it fails in service. In the main propulsion that is a short road to a serious failure, and such events now reach accident reports. Here are the signs that give a fake away before you install it.

Too cheap and too fast is the first sign

A fake competes on price and lead time because it carries none of the costs the original does: certified material, heat treatment, inspection, traceability. An offer clearly cheaper and from stock where the original has a lead time and a high price is not a bargain but a reason to check. It does not mean every cheap replacement is fake - an approved replacement can be honestly cheaper - but the difference alone, unexplained, is a signal, not a recommendation.

The paperwork a fake does not have

• No material certificate, or a certificate whose heat number does not match the marking on the part.
• No batch traceability or serial number where the original assigns them.
• A certificate that cannot be verified with the maker - a scan no one will confirm.
• Note: the documents themselves are also faked, which is why paper is verified with the issuer, not taken on trust.

The part itself gives it away too

• Markings: a different font, a crooked engraving, a shifted logo, a missing or faked hologram and serial number.
• Packaging: poor printing, typos, missing seals and labels that the maker uses as standard.
• Workmanship: machining marks, roughness, weight and dimensions off the original, a coating imitating the material.
• Compare the item with a known genuine one if you have it - differences invisible apart jump out side by side.

The buying channel protects best

The best defence is not a loupe at goods-in but the buying channel. Buy from the maker or a supplier with a documented record of deliveries to shipowners, demand certificates and traceability as standard, verify the serial number with the maker on critical items, and view the part in photos before packing. The grey market and anonymous platforms with a genuine part from nowhere are where a fake enters the chain - the cheapest part can be the most expensive one when it fails at sea.
