Cylinder liner and piston ring wear: when to replace, not wait
Liners and rings wear slowly and predictably - until they stop. A scuffed bore, a broken ring or a scavenge fire can turn a planned renewal into off-hire and a six-figure bill. The whole skill is measuring in time and knowing the number at which the liner comes off the engine. Here is how to read the running surface.

The wear limit is a percentage of the bore
A liner is retired not when it looks bad but when bore wear passes the limit the maker sets - for slow-speed engines that is typically in the region of 0.6-0.8 percent of the cylinder bore, but the exact figure always comes from the manual for the type. You measure with an inside micrometre at several planes and in two directions at right angles, because a liner does not wear evenly: most at the top ring reversal point and along the axis of load.
Ovality and profile, not just the maximum
A single largest number is not enough. The difference between the largest and smallest reading in one plane tells you the ovality, and the spread down the liner tells you the wear profile. A liner inside the bore limit but badly oval still will not hold ring sealing. Record the full measurement sheet, not one value - it is what shows the trend and lets you plan the renewal before it becomes urgent.
Rings: end gap and groove clearance
- Ring end gap grows with wear; past the limit the ring stops sealing and blow-by climbs.
- Axial groove clearance drives oil pumping and ring flutter - a worn groove is renewed with the piston or crown.
- Rings are renewed in sets per cylinder and at every major strip-down - adding one ring to a worn set is a false economy.
Scuffing and bore polishing
The real danger is not even wear but micro-seizure and a polished bore. When the honing marks disappear and the surface goes mirror-bright, oil will not hold on the wall, the film breaks and wear accelerates fast. Vertical scoring, heat discolouration and local wear patches are a signal to lift the head - not to log more running hours. The cause often sits outside the liner: an overloaded or badly atomising injector, poor fuel, cooling water run too cold.
Blow-by speaks before the micrometre
Rising crankcase or under-piston pressure, more oil mist and falling compression are the signs of a worn piston-to-liner seal that you can see between strip-downs. On engines with a separate under-piston space the warning is sometimes a scavenge fire - accumulated carbon and oil ignite from the blow-by. It always means the same thing: the rings or the bore are not holding.
